Look! Our Emperor is Dancing Naked!

The famous proverb goes: whom the gods want to kill or destroy, they first make mad.

This cannot be more correct than in the forthcoming Nigerian elections; particularly in Imo state. In this State, the ruling party - Peoples Democratic Party[PDP] has been in a quagmire and involved in a myriad of power games to elect a candidate to represent them at the gubernatorial level. Subsequent to the announcement of INEC following the recent judgment of the Supreme court, the PDP has withdrawn from the elections at the governorship level and further adopted a candidate of a rival party - Chief Martin Agbaso [http://martinagbaso.com/] as a "consensus candidate". See ThisDAY newspaper report: http://odili.net/news/source/2007/apr/12/211.html

So what exactly makes Chief Martin Agbaso a consensus candidate all of a sudden; given that a few days ago, this particular contender was an opponent of the candidates fielded by the PDP? Are the people of Imo being taken for a ride and made to believe that the candidates fielded by the PDP are indeed the Messiahs for the state?

If so, what guarantees exist to vote any other contenders under the auspices of the PDP party within the state and indeed the nation? Would more opposition candidates suddenly become consensus candidates soon as party faithfuls step on toes of the "godfathers"?

This character trait shows the PDP to be a house in disarray whom the gods have perhaps first made mad and driven its emperor naked into the streets.

Isnt is amazing that the same expelled PDP contestant in Imo state wasnt found incompetent to be in the Senate as a PDP party member? Mere logic would tend to opine that whatever disqualifies the senator from being a competent governor, should equally have disqualified him from sitting in the senate chambers of the nation for the past eight years where he has held sensitive committee positions, and made laws for the country?

Instead, the PDP has maintained that it reserves the power to make substitutions of its candidates even in wanton disregard of the rule of law; buttressing the fact that the PDP horse indeed appears to be pulled by its cart as opposed to the reverse.

The signs of unfolding events in Imo state is a testament of the faithfulness of the PDP towards the nation in upholding the trust of the populace sought. Let us not be deceived anymore by the rancours and manipulations of the PDP. What we need is a brand new leadership, a change from the status quo, and a freshness in the government. Nothing short of this, would deliver us from the merry go round the nation has embarked on over the past years.

Re: Forum Discussions

Its really interesting when my people in Diaspora discuss Nigeria and hold such strong views about what is right or wrong but from the safety of ''That side''. It really brings to fore one fundamental issue with all of us we talk alot and really do nothing to change what is on ground. For clarity and from a guy on the ground

1. Obj has the legal right to declare a public holiday's so what he did was within the powers given to him by the Nigerian constitution. The intent however is what people are against. You do not in a bid to subvert the rule of law declare holiday's. The SC was to hear Atiku's case on Thursday and to stop them from seating your declare two days of holiday's and give the lame excuse that it is to enable people travel to vote. Strangely enough during the voter registration process people where not given holiday's to travel to register and you only vote where you registered so the reason makes no sense.

2. Irrespective of how well OBJ has performed and how strongly Atiku has been linked to corruption its is wrong for OBj to be the judge and jury in atiku's problems. The whole essence of democracy is that firstly the rule of law is upheld. If a man is accused of a crime only the court has the legal authority to pronounce him guilty and sanction him. When a man in this case OBJ on one hand rigs a party primary to produce his friends as its winner and on the other hand says he is fighting corruption its difficult to swallow. Their is nothing more corrupt and unjust as rigging elections be they primaries or the real thing. For the Christians amongst us a house built on sand will fall when the winds of this world hit it . In Nigeria a presidency whose foundations are built on corruption (and let me make it clear here any sort of rigging is corruption) cannot stand. OBJ's issues in his first term were a consequence of how he came into power. I fear Umar Y. will suffer the same fate.

3. I do not like Atiku or most of the political class now but I detest more anyone who arrogates to himself wisdom and power and hates any kind of query or dissent. That my friends is what we are suffering from now. Take the case of Ararume (Don't like him but respect the fact that we took his case through the courts patiently and won) what did Baba and his cronies do after the poor (rich) man won the case in the SC. They suspend him from the party instead of obeying a SC ruling. When our leaders flagrantly disobey the court orders how can we progress and them someone say's OBJ is trying or has tried. My friends the law courts are the only recourse we have here in Nigeria when our rights are violated and when the guys who are supposed to uphold its decisions violate it then we are finished.

4. Before i go lets consider the Ngige case. He has won three rulings that say he has the right to contest and infact the courts have given a ruling that he be included in the list of contestants for Saturday's election. What did our electoral commission say (with the backing of BABA) ''Ngige will never contest in Anambra state'' What did BABA say in the last PDP rally in Awka ''Whether you like it or not (this is while addressing the crowd) Andy is your next governor''. And we say he is trying. INEC was to be served with the court judgment today but the papers report that the INEC officials refused to receive it because as they claim today is a public holiday and they are not working. To note essential services INEC included were exempt from the holiday's as they are supposed to be preparing for the elections tomorrow. This is a country were BABA is trying

To close i am not an Atiku supporter or do i dislike OBJ indeed i think he has done alot in his 8 years of service to Nigeria but like with most African leader's we seem to (always towards the end) want to destroy everything legacy we have built in our time (Mugabe, Amin, Eyadema, Mobutu, our own IBB) are just but a few examples. Obj needs to

1.First accept he does not have the monopoly of knowledge/wisdom .

2. Give us the opportunity to choose whoever we want (its is not for him to directly or indirectly or by brute force) to rule us.

3. Respect the rule of law. Without the respect for the rule of law by everyone Nigeria will not move forward.

Nigeria is greater than any one man. I believe through all this we will come out a stronger Nation. Pray for us all of you and someday come back and cast your votes to elect good leaders for us. I think we need it more than the 7.7billion you repatriate.

Have a great weekend and pray for us my friends
